Chapter 2: Black Knights

Olivia followed Rouge through the forest. A scent made it's way toward her nose and it caused concern. She continued to sniff around, forcing Rouge to stop and turn to her. Out of reflex, Olivia covered her nose and squeaked from her surprise.

“Why are you stopping?” Rouge asked.

Removing her hands from her face, Olivia explained, “I smell... something burning.”

“You know what I smell?” he asked a rhetorical question, “The burning desire to... kill all the Beowolves that just surrounded us.” Rouge equip his scythe and stood back to back with Olivia.

Showing her ax to be ready, Olivia looked at all of the Grimm. They seemed scared, and out of place; as if something happened. Before could thing, Rouge ran toward one of the enemy, and brought his weapon down upon it. In a quick reaction, he spun around and cleaved another in two.

Getting in sync with Rouge's aggressive offense, Olivia spun her ax around her body and arm, and smashed a Beowolf in front of her. Laughing as it died, she took her weapon and slashed to the side, harming another monster. Flurrying the ax around herself, Olivia finished off the poor beast with a decapitation.

Turning his scythe in a rake-like weapon, Rouge was able to catch a few claws coming toward him. Twirling his weapon around, he pounded the heads of the Beowolves before his scythe returned to normal. Rouge used the bottom-end of his scythe to lift the beast into the air before slicing them in two.

Switching from an ax to a bazooka, Olivia laughed as she fired her gun at a horde of Grimm reinforcements. Rouge turned to see what just happened. A Beowolf struck Rouge when he wasn't looking, it only forced him back a few feet. Using his fire control, he added that to his scythe and lunged at the beasts.

Cleaving the monsters left and right, Olivia was stunned to see the carnage. A swing there, spitting the limbs of the monsters. Quickly, the fire incinerated the rest of the Beowolves. When Rouge was done, Olivia finished off her opponent by jumping into the air, and slamming her ax on it's head. Putting away their weapons, the two smiled and continued to walk through the forest.

Eli and Gray walked past a bush and a few trees and finally saw the temple. It was a ruin with several pedestals. On each of the pedestals lays a chess piece in either gold or black. There were two pieces for each color. They approached the ruin and examine the relics.

“Is this what we're supposed to be after?” Eli asked, Gray, who merely shrugged in response. He sighed, “Why did I even bother asking you?” He looked at the black queen and rubbed his chin, “I've played chess, the queen is the best piece.”

Just as Eli was about to grab the queen, Gray spoke, “Don't take the black queen.” Much to Eli's surprise, Gray continued, “It's bad luck.”

Raising an eyebrow, Eli walked toward Gray, “So you do talk!”

“Take the black knight,” Gray said, “Secretive, but deadly.”

“Hmm,” Eli replied as he took the black horse.

From the bushes, rustling could be heard. In less than a second, both Gray and Eli revealed their weapons. Eli, had his two pistols out, and pointed at the area where the sound is coming from. Gray had a dagger with a wire connected to the bottom.

Rouge and Olivia emerged and saw their welcoming party. Seeing how they're greeted with weapons, Rouge thought that he should show his. However, before he could, Olivia began to wave at them and shout in her cheery voice.

“What's up!” Olivia shouted before walking towards them. Eli and Gray put away their weapons. In response to Olivia's greeting, Gray points to the sky. “Oh, very funny,” she responded in annoyance. Gray shrugged, not exactly caring about her dismay. “Ooooh, dark horsey!” Olivia said as she took the second black knight piece and tossed it to Rouge.

Catching the relic, Rouge looked around and questioned, “This is it? Chess pieces?”

Eli spoke, “Well, we got our relics; we should get going.” He and Gray start to head into the forest.

“It'll be better if we stick together and avoid the fire,” Rouge said.

“Fire?” Eli asked as he saw the smoke emerging from the forest. “Well alright then, lead on.”

Becoming party leader, Rouge took point with Olivia in second, Gray was next in line, and Eli was last. With this formation, Rouge could easily lunge at the enemy in his aggressive assault. Olivia could flourish the enemy and take them out. Seeing how Gray is good at taking on multiple opponents at once, Gray has the advantage of demolishing those that Rouge and Olivia can't concentrate on. Being rear guard is the best position for Eli, seeing how he prides himself more on range that close-quarters; he could stop weaker foes before they reach their squad.

They were attacked a few times by Ursa, and Boarbatusk, but it was nothing they couldn't handle. The fire that was started spread pretty far, all of the Grimm were out of their minds in a frenzy. It made thing far more difficult for the three of them to travel back to the cliff. They were eventually surrounded.

“Didn't you say we should avoid the fire?” Eli asked as he fired his pistols at an Ursa charging toward him.

Slicing a Beowolf in two, Rouge replied, “The fire didn't avoid us.”

After firing her bazooka and splattering a dozen Grimm, Olivia shouted, “We have to put it out!”

“We have no water!” Eli retorted as he shot the knees of a Boarbatusk. He then kicks it flat on it's back and then shot it in the head. “How are we supposed to put it out?”

Using his webs to catch the enemy, Gray slashed open three Ursa and two Boarbatusk in a fewconds. “Fire, is the consummation of all energy. What if another fire was started?”

Kicking a Boarbatusk on it's back and shooting at it three times, Eli shouted, “I think that will only make things worse!”

“Haven't you heard of the phrase, fight fire with fire?” Olivia asked as she cleaved a Beowolf in two.

“Well, where are we supposed to get the fire?” Eli yelled as he fell to his knees from the long battles. Gray stood in front of him as an Ursa lunged. Slicing upward, he chopped the bear in two. Shooting out his webs to catch any more that would come in this direction, Gray defended Eli.

With a burning left hand, Rouge grinned, “I got this!” Launching a beam of blazing flames out of his hand, Rouge was putting out the fire with his own. Meanwhile, Olivia and Gray kept the Grimm away from him and Eli. The whole time, Eli was shooting the Grimm that Gray and Olivia missed.

After the fire was put out, Eli caught his breath and stood up. They looked up and saw a giant bird carrying a girl in a red hood and another dressed in white. He got everyone to get a glimpse of the Grimm carrying off their other comrades.

    “Should we uh...” Eli started.

Rouge interrupted him, “Not our problem.”

    “I know but...”

“Not. Our. Problem,” Rouge commanded sternly. “Now lets go, I'd rather get this over with. The sooner the better.”

Accepting that, everyone got in their formation. “It just feels like,” again he was interrupted.

    “I don't care.”

Eli groaned and then turned to Gray and Olivia. Gray was shaking his head at the conversation that just commenced. The whole time, Olivia eyed Gray up and down and looked to be lost in thought. Confused, he approached her and asked, “What's up?”

Spooked at Eli's sudden existence, Olivia yelps. “Sorry, I was just curious about your friend over here.”

“Please don't call him: my friend,” Eli murmured. “Anyways, what's there to be curious about?”

Olivia leaned next to Eli's ear and whispered, “Why is he so quiet?”

“I don't know, why don't you ask him?”

Gray sighed, hearing every word they're saying. “How about you two stop gossiping about him, right in front of him,” Rouge demanded. “If you're going to be like that, at least have the common decency do to it away from him.”

Both turned to see Gray slapping his forehead at what just transpired. Embarrassed, the two shut up and continued to follow Rouge's lead out of the forest. It'll take time, but with the fire gone that should calm down the Grimm monsters for a while. Until then, they'll just have to try and make it out of Emerald Forest with as little contact with the enemy as possible.

Alright everyone, for those wondering why I chose to make the characters pick the Black Knight instead of any other chess pieces; the answer is simple: Team RWBY chose the White Knight, Team ROGE will live up to their name, by being rouges. You'll understand more by what I mean as the story progresses.
